There is nothing to fear about the Caribbean Single Market and Economy (CSME), says principal of Queen’s College, Dr David Browne.

That was Browne’s assertion as he delivered his annual report to the Queen’s College Association (QCA) when members of the alumni gathered for their annual general meeting on Saturday in the school’s hall.

“The space which is Barbados’ will not continue and cannot continue to provide meaningful employment for our people,” he said, adding that Queen’s College was about the business of preparing productive citizens for the CSME and beyond. “We must prepare our students to function throughout the region and further afield, and it is critical that we prepare them well,” he stressed.

The principal reported on excellent academic results at Queen’s College during the past academic year, with the highlight being the attainment of ten Barbados Scholarships and seventeen Government Exhibitions.

In her report to the alumni, QCA president, Michelle Daniel, outlined some of the accomplishments of the first year of the current Executive Committee’s two-year term, and shared some of the plans for 2019. She listed the award of the first two QCA UWI Scholarships to two recent graduates of QC last November as a major achievement. Daniel encouraged other alumni to support the work of the QCA, as the association sought to assist the school with some of its projects in trying economic and financial conditions.

The association got off to a healthy start to the year with a presentation from Nurse Teon Waithe of the ‘Yute Gym’ Programme at the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Her topic was “Heart Health and You”, and she explained the function of the heart and outlined key activities to ensure heart health, including healthy diet, regular physical activity, stress management and the importance of health screenings. The business meeting was followed by an aerobics session led by Jamil Jones of the independent fitness company Premium Performance Training.

Other members of the current Executive Committee are Suzette Clarke – Vice President; Gayle Drakes – Honorary Secretary; Sherry Cumberbatch – Treasurer; Heather Harewood – Assistant Secretary-Treasurer; Ryan Walters – Public Relations Officer; and Floor Members – Jacqueline Clarke, Sandra Sealy, Kathryn Daniel and Sharon Marshall. Cecilia Phillips Stallard is the Immediate Past President. (PR)
