Armed with tambourines, dancers, and flags bearing the 120th-anniversary logo, members marched through Broad Street and gathered at Independence Square where they had an open-air service. Retired Community Relations Director Major Denzil Walcott told Barbados TODAY that this year begins the 121st year of the establishment of the Salvation Army. “The celebration really is a conclusion of the Salvation Army’s 12oth year which started last year. Throughout the year we had a number of activities and this week we were able to have as our guest Territorial Commander, Commissioner Devon Haughton and his wife Verona Haughton,” he said. Executive Officer, the Salvation Army Florida Divisional Band, Major Cameron Henderson told members as well as curious onlookers that the reason they marched was to spread the Good News about God’s salvation. “The blood and fire God talks about is the greatest gift of love he could ever give and we could ever receive. We are marching for one reason which is to get your attention, to celebrate God and share with you how wonderful God is and has been in our lives,” Henderson said. The members of the Salvation Army and onlookers gave glory to God as they enjoyed selections in music, mime, and dance which were led by the Divisional Youth Chorale, the Salvation Army Florida Band Creative Arts, Divisional Singing Company, Barbados Divisional Timbrel Brigade, Barbados Divisional Festival Choir, Barbados Divisional Dance Troupe and the Salvation Army Divisional Band. The festivities were cut short as showers of blessings impeded their activities in Independence Square, Bridgetown, however, they continue their celebrates tomorrow with a Worship Service beginning at 10 a.m. in the Queen’s Park Steel Shed, St Michael.
