KINGSTOWN – The woman who tested positive and became the second person in St. Vincent and the Grenadines confirmed as having COVID-19 exposed 64 other persons to the disease.

This is according to information revealed by Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves at a Ministry of Health press conference in Kingstown on Friday.

There has been much anger and public outrage about the conduct of the woman, who broke her 14-day quarantine after returning from the United States on March 25.

She visited several business places in Kingstown and spent time in at least two villages even as she had begun exhibiting symptoms of the disease.

The woman was reported to health authorities on March 28 and has been in isolation since then.

The woman, known as Case #2 — as she is the second person in SVG to test positive for the virus — is now under “police watch, police protection”.

That will continue “because of her own history of going hither and thither despite the quarantine,” the prime minister said.

He said that the woman has been “under tight lockdown” since March 28 — days before authorities received the positive test result on April 1.

Gonsalves said:

“The person who had closest contact with her had no symptoms but they advised that that person be put in quarantine because her home circumstances did not allow for that.”

The government has not disclosed the locations of the isolation facility that is being used until the one being built at Argyle is completed.

Gonsalves said on Sunday that the authorities have contacted the 64 persons that Case #2 came into contact with.

He said that overall, 460 persons are in quarantine as a result of COVID-19 with the six active cases of the disease in isolation either at home or at a government facility.

Meanwhile, speaking on WE FM on Sunday, the prime minister said that people should not think that he is “not angry about the way certain people behave” adding that he, however, cannot make policy in anger.

Gonsalves said it is not his “role” to come on radio and say Case #2 should be quartered or jailed.

“I can’t do that. That’s not my role. In fact, that is not the role of anybody outside of a due process.”

He said he knows that among some people that is not a popular point.

“But you elected me to lead, to lead responsibly,” the prime minister said.
