Sadé on canvas . . . Artist painting happiness into the lives of many

Twenty-two-year-old visual artist Sadé Payne is an impressionistic colourist and has her sights set on being known worldwide.

She told Bajan Vibes: “I would love to see my art all over the world gracing luxurious interior spaces and homes. My goal is to be the best artist I possibly can be, to have my own ocean-inspired art gallery catering to clients who are seeking large-scale abstract impressionistic ocean work for their homes, villas or commercial spaces.”

Her painting style can be described as distinguished and bold with vibrant brush strokes and palette knife textures. But despite having obtained an Associate Degree in Fine Arts from Barbados Community College (BBC) in 2013, her artistic journey is largely self-taught.

Though self-taught she added that it is also crucial to have a strong supportive system in the home to help push her, especially in the difficult times when she felt like giving up.

“My parents are there for me as best as they can. But my mom Denise is always the one person I can always count on to cheer me on, even when I feel like quitting at times,” the woman who prefers acrylic on canvas said.

As for schooling, she said that tertiary education only provided her with the basic drawing and painting tools needed to create.

“When it comes to creative thinking skills and entering the world of art to make a source of income, it was up to me to do plenty of research, improve my skills and to come up with a unique style and create excellent quality work that is going to stand out from the rest.”

Sadé has been involved in art for four years professionally but her father Ron Payne was also involved in her artistic interests as she was introduced to creativity from an early age.

“Often my dad caught me messing around with his professional quality mediums even though I had plenty of crayons, poster paints, markers and the likes suitable for my age. [And he helped me] in my childhood with his paintings beautifully displayed in our home,” she told Bajan Vibes.

And since then art has been Sadé’s means of expression and eventually became her income. Her work has not only been locally acquired but is also in several countries including America, Canada and England.

“When you look at my art, I want your gaze to be held captive among the vibrant hues and loose strokes. I want your soul to come alive with passion. My art is the haven to escape the troubles of the world and turn fantasies into realities,” the past Christ Church Foundation student said.

Sadé said she gets most of her inspiration from the sea side. “A huge body of my work is based on inspiration from the ocean. The sea was always my escape and the source for my freedom of expression. From the crashing waves to the pounding of water onto the shores… it’s beyond words can describe.

“[Creating] numerous wave and marine life themed paintings personally gives me an opportunity to experience the enchanting moments of underwater life and to feel the power of the sea. It is my way of turning my fantasy into the new reality.”

And singing the slogan Be Intriguingly Bold Sade is painting happiness into the hearts of many. (MR)
