Marshall ordered to pay back his former workplace

Despite being given a forthwith fine, Shurland Winston Marshall was still allowed four additional days to come up with compensation after he admitted to stealing from his workplace five years ago.

The leniency was shown by Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant who opted not to impose the 12-month prison sentence when Marshall revealed he was unable to pay $5378 in compensation.

Marshall of #96 Parkinson Field, St Michael, had previously denied entering Sol Collymore Rock’s Service Station between July 19 and 20, 2015, and stealing 304 boxes of cigarettes, nine bottles of Brandy, 25 energy drinks, 12 packs of wrappers, 20 sim cards, one bag and $1405 in Barbados currency, a total value of $5378 belonging to K Maycock Investments Inc.

But when he appeared before Cuffy-Sargeant in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court he admitted to the offences.

In giving the facts, Station Sergeant Cameron Gibbons said Marshall was employed as a security guard at the gas station.

On the date in question, he stole the items and attempted to leave the establishment but was chased and held.

The magistrate ordered him to repay the total cost of the items forthwith or spend 12 months in prison, but Marshall, who is currently on remand at HMP Dodds, told the court he did not have any money.

However, he gave the assurance that if he was given until Tuesday he would have some of the money.

Magistrate Cuffy-Sargeant acceded to his request and remanded him to prison until Tuesday to give him an opportunity to raise the payment.
