Court Local News Shoplifter caught on camera Barbados Today10/09/20201264 views Convict Anthony Rudolph Thorpe today claimed he was “unfortunate and unlucky” moments after he racked up conviction number 102. The 62-year-old from Derricks, St James will spend the next 18 months at Her Majesty’s Prison Dodds for stealing a sander and drill totalling in value at $1 020.34. The tools belonged to Carters and Company Limited. The theft was committed between September 3 and 8. Sergeant Cameron Gibbons disclosed that the manager at the Barbarees Hill store reported that the tools were discovered missing during a check of the stock. The company’s system was also checked to determine whether the items had been sold, but that was not the case. Officials then made a check of the CCTV footage. In it Thorpe was seen taking the tools placing them in a haversack and walking out the establishment without paying. The matter was reported to police. He was caught when he visited the store for a second time but the property was not recovered. When asked whether he had anything to say to the court, Thorpe told Magistrate Manila Renee, “I am unfortunate and unlucky . . . I suffer from diabetes and hypertension.” A check by the magistrate saw that Thorpe had 101 convictions. “Looking at your card it seems as soon as you are out, you are back in,” Magistrate Renee said, adding that based on the convicted man’s history only a sentence of imprisonment would do. As she imposed the sentence she took into consideration Thorpe’s guilty plea and the fact that he had not wasted the court’s time.
