Barbados under severe thunderstorm watch

The Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) has placed the island under a severe thunderstorm watch.

In a weather bulletin released this evening the BMS said the alert was valid from 7 p. m. Monday, September 28 until 11 p. m. or sooner if conditions warrant.

“A severe-thunderstorm watch is issued when significant lightning activity [occurs] in a short period of time (generally less than six hours) within the watch area. It does not mean that severe thunderstorms will occur, but are possible.

“Severe lightning activity associated with scattered thunderstorms . . . . Expect some lightning activity in the near future or near your location. Increase likelihood of power outages if lightning strikes power utility infrastructure,” the BMS reported.
