Senate informed of Moore’s resignation

President of the Senate Reginald Farley today officially notified the Upper House of the resignation of former Independent Senator Toni Moore who is contesting the St George North by-election.

He made the statement at the beginning of the sitting, during the announcements and notices section.

It was also disclosed that Senator Lucille Moe is overseas on assignment. The former Minister of Information, Broadcasting and Public Affairs has not been to Parliament since the Cabinet reshuffle was announced in July.

Senator Farley told the Chamber that Moore, General Secretary of the Barbados Workers’ Union, had sent formal notice to Governor General Dame Sandra Mason.

Reading the October 13 correspondence addressed to the Clerk of Parliament from the Governor General’s private secretary, he said: “Dear Sir, I have the honour to inform that Independent Senator Ms Toni Moore who was appointed to the Senate pursuant to the provisions of Section 36.4 of the Constitution has, by letter to Her Excellency the Governor General dated 2nd October, 2020, tendered her resignation as a Senator with effect from 1st October, 2020. Her Excellency has accepted the said resignation.”

There had been calls from some quarters for Moore to resign after being named the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) by-election candidate. She will contest the November 11 polls to replace Gline Clarke who has retired from active politics.

On Sunday night, as he addressed a BLP political meeting at Sheffield Pasture, Lower Estate, St George, Attorney General Dale Marshall broke the news that Moore had resigned. (IMC)
