Man faces charge for seriously injuring brother

An alleged hammer attack has left one brother nursing serious injuries at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) and the other on remand at Her Majesty’s Prison Dodds.

Ricardo Elwin Sealy, of Cambridge, St Joseph appeared before Chief Magistrate Ian Weekes this afternoon charged that he, in the District ‘F’ Belleplaine jurisdiction, did serious bodily harm to Ryan Sealy with intent to maim, disfigure or disable him. The offence occurred on March 27.

The 33-year-old barber was not required to plead to the indictable charge when he went before the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court today.

And although Station Sergeant Crisha Graham told the Chief Magistrate that the accused was unknown to the law courts she objected to his bail at this time on several grounds including the serious nature of the offence and the fact that the complainant was still a patient at the QEH.

“My understanding is that he may not survive so the charge may be upgraded at some point,” Officer Graham said adding that there were fears that the accused would not appear to court on the days given if granted bail at this time. “We also believe that his household and the wider society needs protection from him,” she said.

Just before he began his application for bail, Chief Magistrate Weekes asked the accused what was his connection to the complainant.

“He supposed to be my brother,” he replied. He went on to agree that they did not get along and told the court he “did not see a reason” why he should be remanded at this time.

Asked about the Crown’s submission to deny him bail given his brother’s condition, the accused said, “I really, really sorry about the situation. I hope the outcome don’t be death to Ryan Sealy.”

His application was denied and his case was transferred to the District ‘F’ Magistrates’ Court for April 27.
