BMS Update: Volcanic ash and small craft warning downgraded to advisory

The Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) has downgraded the volcanic ash and small craft warning for the island.

In its latest bulletin the BMS said: “The southern parts of the island have been impacted the most by the recent ash plume. However much of the ash is presently weakening and satellite imagery does not currently indicate any further explosive eruptions. Once this general trend continues then this advisory will be terminated sometime this afternoon.”

The forecasters however noted that given the highly active nature of the La Soufriere Volcano, it is likely that further eruptions will occur, and depending on the intensity of the ash plume and wind direction, Barbados may continue to experience reduced visibility and further ash deposits.

The BMS advised members of the public and marine users to continue to be alert as as ashfall will cause a significant reduction in visibility, and possible respiratory problems for persons who experience difficulty in breathing. Persons with respiratory issues or allergies must travel with, or have close at hand, all prescribed relevant medications in case of an emergency.

It also urged marine users to stay in port, particularly if GPS is not in use on vessels and closely monitor the forecast for critical updates.
