Barbadians ‘happy to get out’ for Mother’s Day

After relatively quiet Mother’s Day celebrations in 2020 because of COVID-19 lockdown restrictions, Barbadians turned out in their numbers today to celebrate the special day.

Several families flocked to Champers Restaurant, The Sands Hotel, and other establishments around the island to enjoy the variety of cuisines on offer.

Speaking with Barbados TODAY, owner of Champers Restaurant, Chiryl Newman, said that the response so far has been an overwhelming one for Mother’s Day, with the restaurant being fully booked for both lunch and dinner spots.

“The day has been going brilliantly. I think Barbadians, because they could not celebrate Mother’s Day last year because we were in shut down, were just happy to get out. After all the ash [from La Soufriere volcano], people were just fed and [so] came out today,” she said.

Though they were fully booked, Newman stressed that all COVID-19 protocols were being followed.

“We have everyone nicely spaced and everything is staggered so there are not a lot of people here arriving at the same time or leaving at the same time.”

Front Office Manager for The Sands Barbados hotel, Isabella Goodman, said that this year’s Mother’s Day luncheon was the first of its kind for the resort, after opening for the first time back in December of 2019, with around 80 people being booked for the buffet.

Goodman said, “So far the response has been good; we are pleased to see that people are bringing their mother’s out as traditionally they do. This is our biggest luncheon for the year, so we are glad to see people are [enjoying] it.

“The special today is the lunch. Since the pandemic began we have not had a buffet because we have not had the numbers. So the special itself is a buffet and it is a lovely spread.” (SB)
