UPDATE: Fire destroys house at Worthing, Christ Church

Fire destroyed a house at Worthing, Christ Church, just behind the Guana Dong Restaurant Friday evening.

Hastings and Worthing personnel responded to the scene shortly before 8 p.m. at the residence owned by Cecily Cole, 93, of 2nd Avenue.

The house, which had seven bedrooms and five bathrooms; was occupied by Cole and two other people — Larry Bethel, 80, and Monica Hinkson, 68.

The blaze was reported to have started in the kitchen area and rapidly spread throughout the house.

Two of the occupants who were at home at the time — Cole and Bethel — suffered burns to their back, hands and feet. They were transported by police personnel to the QEH for medical attention. Both victims are in stable condition.

The blaze was fully extinguished about 11:44 pm by nine fire service personnel who arrived in two fire tenders.

An investigation in to fire is ongoing.
