High Commission offers support to citizens in assault case

A burglary and sexual assault that unfolded a week ago at a West Coast property appears to have the full attention of the British High Commission in Bridgetown.

In a very brief statement over the weekend, the United Kingdom’s diplomatic office here revealed that it was offering support to two British holidaymakers who were the victims of a crime.

“We are supporting two British nationals who were victims of crime while on holiday in Barbados and are in contact with the local authorities,” said the statement.

Last Friday, Barbados TODAY broke the news of a police investigation that was launched into a burglary and sexual assault that occurred at a guest house at Lower Carlton, St James, where the British couple, a male and female were staying.

According to reports the perpetrator, a masked gunman, sexually assaulted the woman, before making off with jewelry, cash and cellphones.

Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) Acting Inspector Rodney Inniss revealed that the Criminal Investigations Division (CID) was probing the matter.

“It is an unfortunate incident,” Minister of Tourism and International Transport Senator Lisa Cummins told Barbados TODAY last Friday.

“It is certainly not something that is reflective of the Barbadian ethos, and the police have our full support in investigating and prosecuting if they find the perpetrator,” she added. (KS)
