Son puts gun in mom’s basket

BT Court

A 27-year-old man admitted to putting a loaded unlicensed firearm in a pink laundry basket in his mother’s bedroom almost two years ago.

When Shaquille Omar Romario Carter, of Abbeystone Drive, Husbands, St James appeared before Justice Christopher Birch on Friday he pleaded guilty to possession of a 9 mm luger calibre semi-automatic pistol without a valid licence on August 17, 2019, and eight rounds of ammunition without the necessary permit.

Crown Counsel Joyann Catwell who is the prosecutor in the case along with Crown Counsel Keith Robertson said the illegal items were discovered when police executed a search warrant at Carter’s home.

The silver gun was found at the bottom of the laundry basket which contained clothes.

His mother denied culpability telling lawmen at the time: “I did not leave that there and it is not mine.”

Carter took responsibility. “I put that in there,” he told the lawmen.

Before he was charged for the offence he told the police he had gotten the weapon from another man and had plans to pawn it.
However, he took it home and the police found it.

The case against the convict will continue before Justice Birch in Supreme Court No. 5a on October 1.

A pre-sentencing report has been ordered, and on his next appearance Carter, who is representing himself, is expected to mitigate on his own behalf.
