Local News Emmerson Beckles is Kiwanis of The Year Barbados Today Traffic15/10/2021089 views Despite their inability to meet face-to-face the Kiwanis Club of Barbados North recently held its annual awards ceremony in a virtual setting where members were honoured for outstanding service. The club’s prestigious Kiwanian of the Year Award went to Emmerson Beckles for his yeoman work throughout the year. Beckles who chairs the club’s community services committee was lauded for reaching out to help touch the lives of both children and the elderly in various northern districts. President of the Kiwanis Club North, Angela Goodridge, praised his commitment and dedication to duty which was very evident during the COVID-19 pandemic where there was a greater appeal for help. The president also lauded all of the other honorees for their dedication to the club and service to the community noting that during the difficult times they had risen to the many challenges. The club was also commended for its work in the community and with children by outgoing Governor for Atlantic Canada and the Caribbean Dr Delores Lewis and local Lieutenant Governor Cynthia Blackman. Dr Lewis is the first person from Barbados to have held the title of Governor since the organisation was established on the island. The Kiwanis North Club organises an annual homework programme for primary school students writing the Barbados Secondary Schools Entrance Examination (The Common Entrance Exam). This signature event which has been undertaken for more than two decades attracts students from beyond its traditional northern catchment area. The awards ceremony was indeed a celebratory event as the co-masters of the evening Calvin Briggs and Anthony Sobers kept the programme alive with their interjection of humour much to the delight of members and guests.
