Appeal court hears challenge to theft conviction, sentence

A three-member panel of Justices of Appeal is currently considering a challenge brought by convicted thief Anderson Ryan Ince against his conviction and sentence for a million-dollar theft.

Justices Rajendra Narine, Jefferson Cumberbatch and Francis Belle informed all parties involved that their decision on the appeal has been reserved.

Ince, of Hannays, St Lucy and a former clerical officer, was found guilty by a nine-member jury in October 2017 of stealing and money laundering, sometime between August 1, 2003, and August 1, 2005. The charges related to the sum of $1,118,500, belonging to the Psychiatric Hospital and vested with the Central Bank of Barbados.

Ince was sentenced to ten years in prison.

Through his attorneys Angella Mitchell-Gittens and Martie Garnes, he appealed the verdict and sentence on seven grounds.

Senior Crown Counsel Olivia Davis who appeared with Crown Counsel Asante Brathwaite has asked the Court of Appeal to dismiss Ince’s challenge.
