NIFCA tells a pictorial story of the ashfall

The Ashfall: Things Seen and Unseen, a digital book which features 55 breathtaking photographs that have been paired with moving literary captions, was recently launched by The National Cultural Foundation.

Released for NIFCA 2021, this photo book captures the impact of the eruption of the La Soufriere volcano on Barbados and St. Vincent.

The digital book marries these dramatic photos from some of Barbados’ leading photographers, including: Ronnie Carrington, Sandy Pitt, Reco Moore, Remy Rock and Jamal Weekes with captions from NIFCA 2019 Literary Arts winners Alicia Howard, Shanae Gill, Abayomi Marshall and Stephen Sandiford.

Writers were tasked with providing apt captions to go with what the photographs are depicting. The reader is therefore exposed to the best in young Barbadian talent while going on a journey from the Red Zone in St. Vincent to the streets and landscapes of Barbados.

Cultural Officer in the Literary Arts, Karra Price, said that it was important to cement this moment in history for future generations.

“This publication tells the story of a resilient people who came together during a time of adversity. The book is aptly entitled The Ashfall: Things seen and Unseen because readers will be able to experience the ashfall in new and familiar ways.”

The project also highlights the fine work of the Sanitation Service Authority during a time where households were severely impacted by the ashfall. Similarly, it shows the dedication of the Barbados Defence Force at work in St.
Vincent immediately after the eruption.
