Would-be robber flees empty handed

Staff at a Western Union/Surepay payment centre in Oistins, Christ Church got a scare on Thursday evening as an armed man attempted to rob the facility.

However, according to proprietor Joel McCarthy, no one was physically injured in the incident, neither was anything taken.

“He attempted to get in between the ceiling and the cage [that separates customers and staff] but apparently it was too small. I understand that he had a gun that he removed from his haversack and then he attempted to get into the area where the girls were. Fortunately for us, he wasn’t able to and then he just jumped and ran,” he said, adding that he intends to increase security.

“I would carry the cage . . . right up to the roof so that no one will have access.”

Mc Carthy said his staff was traumatised by the incident but had gradually recovered and the outlet will re-open for business tomorrow.

“The girls said they are coming to work tomorrow but I will be here with them too,” he said.

Police are continuing investigations.
