Local News Sagicor conducts timely checks at its adopted schools Barbados Today Traffic17/07/20220215 views Forty-nine-year-old Sharon Douglin has decided to finally break her silence about her abuse by writing her book Made for More – Overcoming Self Doubt and the Cycle of Abuse. The debut author who released her book on Amazon on June 22, 2022 said that she decided to write her book to become a voice for the voiceless. “I experienced childhood abuse and I want to share my story to help others. I noticed sexual abuse, especially, has been swept under the carpet throughout the Caribbean and when it happens to children, they are forced to keep the events to themselves to protect the abuser, which is wrong. Many persons who would have experienced abuse of any form find themselves repeating patterns whether those patterns are low self-esteem, self-doubt, addictions, or getting into unhealthy relationships because its familiar. I want to show them that those negative patterns are connected to the trauma that they have experienced. I want the abusers to know about the ripple effect their actions have had on the abusee. I want the abusee to know that the abuse was not their fault. I want them to know how worthy they are and that they were made for more than the negative words or experiences they have had,” she said. Douglin who is a graduate of Erdiston Teacher’s College where she studied Counselling and the Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology where she holds a Diploma in Office Administration said she knew from an early age that she wanted to be a writer. “As a child I took loose sheets of paper and made notebooks and I would pour my heart into them. I always wished that I could turn my stories into a book. At school I was always excited when we were given essays to write as this is where I would escape and let my imagination create beautiful stories,” she said. Douglin said that writing her book was a form of therapy as she had to confront some of the pain and trauma that she would have experienced as a child. “Writing this book was a healing journey. I remember the first time I sent it off to the editor I wept uncontrollably because my story was no longer a secret. During the writing process I had to pause for periods of time and address issues that I had put in a box, I had to recall the events, feel the emotions that came with them and heal so that I could write about it. Writing a book is not a simple task. For me, some days I wanted to give up, but I collaborated with great people such as Eagle Eye Services and Shelev Publishing who were patient with me and helped me to bring this book to life,” she said. Douglin said that her family was relieved when she told them that she had written a book, so much so that her children exclaimed, “finally mummy!” She said that the response from the public has been encouraging. “The response has been great, persons that follow me on my Facebook Pages – Sharon Douglin and The Essence of Ronnie are happy that I finally wrote the book. Many of them have encouraged me to write a book based on the stories that I write on both pages,” she said. The author had some words of encouragement for anyone that has been a victim of abuse. “It was not your fault! I want to encourage them to speak to a trained counsellor to work through the trauma. I also want to caution parents to be protective of their children – please be careful with who you leave your children with. To the persons struggling with low self-esteem and self-doubt because of the words spoken to them, I want you to know that they were all lies as you are a winner, and you were made for more,” she said. The book Made for More – Overcoming Self Doubt and The Cycle of Abuse is available on Amazon stores internationally. (Write Right PR Services)
