Comedy show to provide laughter and expose talent

Simon Alleyne

Cocktails and Comedy is hosting a show entitled Cackle Out which seeks to leave the audience in stitches tomorrow at 8.p.m. in the Mount Gay Visitors Centre, Mighty Grynner Highway, Bridgetown, St Michael.

At the event patrons can enjoy performances from Jason, Biko and SunRokk all of whom are the three pillars of Cocktails and Comedy that have been developing new material monthly which patrons have thoroughly enjoyed.

Not only shall patrons appreciate comedy but there will also be DJ PowerSerg who will be playing a wide range of selections for the members of the audience to dance and have a good time.

Cocktails and Comedy is a cultural entity that bridges a comedy club with a cocktail bar experience which started in September 2020 and provides audiences with premium cocktails and comedy in a safe environment and provides their audience with some lighthearted fun in a post-COVID environment.

Founder of Cocktails and Comedy, Simon Alleyne, said that coming off the success of his group Rum and Koke, he decided that they would provide a space for local emerging stand-up comedians.

“We have toured extensively over the years as a group and most recently we performed in New York and Grenada at Caribbean Comedy shows. However, I saw the need to create a comedy industry in Barbados that would provide local emerging comedians with the opportunity to develop their craft and also be paid for their talent.

Cocktails and Comedy has plans for a major comedy show and there is the possibility of touring regionally as well,” Alleyne said.

The former student of Combermere, educator and disaster management specialist, said Barbadians have always appreciated comedy but did not know monthly comedy shows were happening on the island.

Thus, he is hopeful that by highlighting it in the local media that persons would recognise that there are comedy events happening that can provide an element of unwinding in the current economic situation of Barbados.

“When I decided to become a comedian and later performed Laff it Off, I understood the principles of comedic writing and performance and formed an alliance with Chrispen Hackett and founded Rum and Koke comedy.

I want that as our company grows and develops that we not only provide a safe comedic space but that we can impart some of the knowledge that we have gained on the young and upcoming performers as we believe that comedy is something that can be added to the English Literature programme to show students how they can use prose in a comedic way,” he said.
