Tuach impressive at Super Girl Pro in Oceanside

Fresh off an impressive run in Virginia Beach at the WSL 3000 Women’s Surf Pro event at the end of August, where she placed fifth out of 48 of North America’s best female surfers, and a quarter-final finish at the WRV Outer Banks Pro held from August 31 to September 4, Tuach has come away with yet 5th finish at the biggest event in women’s professional surfing, the Nissan Super Girl Pro, featuring 96 of the region’s best.

Tuach battled from the Round of 64 all the way to the quarterfinals, winning all of her heats along the way with explosive surfing in the tricky conditions on offer. In her Round of 64 heat, she amassed an impressive heat total of 14.93 with an 8:00 and a 6.93 in her score line to earn the third highest heat total of that round. She defeated former Super Girl champion Samantha Sibley, who placed second with a total of 12.50 and Keanna Miller and Kayleigh Gilchrist who scored a total of 9.20 and 6.90 respectively to be eliminated from the event.

Her round of 32 heat started slowly with not much on offer and Tuach sat in fourth with a 4.33 in her score line until the dying minutes of the heat when, with priority, she found a peeling right-hander which saw her make 4 explosive turns for an excellent 7.83 which moved her from fourth to first and on to the Round of 16.

In the Round of 16 she was up against hometown girl and winner of the Ultimate Surfer Reality Show, Tia Blanco, so she knew she had to come out of the blocks fast. She did just that, dropping an excellent 7.17 on her first wave with her strong backhand attack which she then backed up with a 7.27 for one of the most explosive off-the-lip, fins free manoeuvres of the event. Her heat total of 14.33 was the highest heat total of that Round and set her up for a quarter-final clash with defending Super Girl champion Caroline Marks from the United States.

Chelsea led this encounter until the dying seconds, continuing her impressive form dropping a 6.33 and a 5.33 but Caroline found a wave at the end that gave her one explosive manoeuvre for a 7.33 to take the win from Chelsea.

“It was tough to lose like that in the dying moments of the heat but that is how it goes in our sport. It is never over until it is over. Still, I’m really happy with how I have been performing at this event. My boards feel incredible under my feet and I’ve been dropping big scores all week-end. I feel this has been a great preparation for the ISA World Surfing Games next week where I’m looking forward to flying the Barbados flag high along with my Team mates,” Tuach said to our sports editor after the event.

With her fifth-place finish at this event, Tuach has now jumped to sixth on the North American Regional 2022/2023 rankings. She will be competing in the ISA World Surfing Games at Huntington Beach from September 19 -24. (PR)
