Junior national football team defeats UWI

Barbados Under-17 national training squad celebrates one of their goals versus UWI Blackbirds.

Barbados Under-17 national football squad continues to train in preparations for the Concacaf Championship next month with a series of warm-up matches.

Last Sunday, the junior Tridents defeated UWI Blackbirds 3-1 at the Barbados Football Association Wildey Turf. Goals from Ronan Lee, Kairos Greaves and Rovaldo Massiah were enough to give the Under-17 training side victory over the Blackbirds.

Head coach Fabian Massiah said, “The result was basically for them; it was a good one. We are still working on the principles both in attack and defense, and then more importantly the transitional part of the game. We were able to win the ball in midfield and play forward as quickly as possible and I was pleased with that.

“This is the most important phase of the preparation which is to become match fit. Playing against Premier League teams who are getting ready to begin their season, I think it gives them quality opposition to play against.” He added.

Barbados has been drawn in Group F for the Under-17 Concacaf Championship set to begin on Saturday, February 11th in Guatemala. They will face United States of America in their opening encounter before battling against Canada two days later and Caribbean neighbours Trinidad and Tobago on Saturday, February 15th. (PR)
