Husbands shares jockey lead in Fort Erie

Barbadian Chris Husbands joined Pierre Mailhot at the top of the standings at Fort Erie when he logged a brace on the seven-race programme on Monday.

The 33-year-old won race two over five furlongs with favourite Sweet Finale and returned in the day’s final race – a CAN$ 24 600 allowance – to score with 4-1 bet One More Ring in another five-furlong dash.

Mailhot rode a single winner on the day’s card in race six with favourite Flat Out Angel to move to four wins for the newly minted season, level with Husbands.

The two-time reigning champion at the southern Ontario oval, Husbands opened his account when he paired with five-year-old chestnut mare Sweet Finale to thrash the three-year-old and upward fillies and mares by 3-¾ lengths.

They held only a narrow lead on the turn under pressure from 2-1 bet Lime, ridden by Barbadian Desean Bynoe, but exploded in the stretch to take the wire comfortably.

Husbands suffered a string of disappointing finishes before conjuring up a strong ride in race seven, also over five furlongs, to carry three-year-old gelding One More Ring to another 3-¾ length score.

Two-to-one chance Blues Power set the early pace before Husbands brought One More Ring from a stalking position to collar the field. (CMC)
