For the first time in almost 20 years, there is a Mr and Mrs Sunjet Toastmasters. Last Saturday, the Sunjet Toastmasters Club held the pageant at the Lester Vaughan School in Cane Garden, St. Thomas and by the end of the evening the judges awarded the titles to Anthony Alleyne who garnered 573 points and Sakeirah Rawlins with 469. The contestants modelled business wear and delivered on stage with impromptu speaking, talent and prepared speeches. Organiser, the Distinguished Toastmaster Beverley Parris said “I am very pleased with the level of performances and am proud that the club was able to stage the event once again for the first time in over a decade.” She also said it was an excellent developmental opportunity for volunteer participants. One audience member Mark Knight said he thoroughly enjoyed the show and was eagerly looking forward to next year’s. Toastmasters International is a non profit organisation focused on developing leaders and members’ public speaking skills. As part of its outreach efforts, the club hosts an annual Youth Leadership Programme for teenagers and a Speechcraft workshop for adults in addition to assisting other groups with seminars. Outgoing President Anthony Alleyne said that it was the club’s intention to increase the programmes reach in the coming year so that more young persons would benefit. “Communication skills are absolutely essential in today’s world and our youth and students need to learn those techniques that help them talk to, interact with and understand each other better,” Alleyne said. Sunjet Toastmasters Club meets every 2nd and 3rd Thursday via Zoom and every first and last Thursday at the Lester Vaughan School. (PR) Pageant contestants on stage.
