Triathletes fall just short of podium finishes at Commonwealth Youth Games 

 

Triathletes Isis Gaskin, Luke McIntyre, and Fynn Armstrong fell short of securing medals at the seventh Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago despite impressive performances.

The trio represented Barbados at the Triathlon event in the Individual Super Sprint Distance on Sunday in Tobago.

Gaskin, 17, featured among the 21 athletes that graced the start-line in the women’s triathlon.

Her time of 31:03s copped sixth place but was better than any of the other five Caribbean athletes in the swim-ride-run event.

Australia’s Aspen Anderson (32:53s) won gold, while silver went to Scotland’s Jessica Heeps (33:17s) and Maja Brinkmann of Namibia secured bronze with a time of 34:02s.

Meanwhile, in the Men’s Super Sprint Distance, Armstrong who was the first male Caribbean athlete to cross the line, finished sixth with a time of 31:03. McIntyre who finished in a time of 33:09s was a little down the ladder at 14th in a pool of 25 competitors.

The Men’s Super Sprint Distance gold medal went to Jersey’s Luke Holmes, who finished the course in Tobago in 29:47s. Alex Robin (30:03s) of Scotland and Australia’s Jack Latham (30:38s) round off the top three.

The athletes will return to competition on Tuesday where Gaskin and Armstrong will compete in the Mixed Team Relay Super Sprint.  rawletoney@barbadostoday.bb
