Ministry finalising “comprehensive report” on Ann Hill School environmental problems

The Ministry of Education is producing a full report on the environmental issues impacting the Ann Hill School.

“A comprehensive report is being finalised at this time,” it said in a brief statement on Wednesday after days of the Barbados Union of Teachers (BUT) complaining that a number of environmental issues were affecting staff and students at the school.

The union said some teachers were experiencing respiratory problems and had reported ill. They also complained about mould in some classrooms.

The ministry statement added that repairs were being conducted to the roof of the hall and some classrooms where reports of leaking had been pointed out, adding that the renovations were being done outside of school hours.

On Tuesday, the BUT reported that 22 teachers refused to enter the classrooms as there was a lot of dust in the rooms coming from the construction of a fire station opposite the Pine Plantation Road, St Michael school.

The ministry said in the statement that Deputy Chief Education Officer Joy Adamson visited the school on Tuesday evening and spoke with the educators and their concerns were documented.

It added that despite the action taken by the teachers, school was not suspended and the learning institution has been open since Monday. (SZB)
