Combermere dispatch Alleyne to take netball crown

The highly anticipated final took place at the Wildey Gymnasium, where a vibrant atmosphere resonated with the enthusiastic support of students from the participating schools.

Notably, Combermere’s supporters exuded the loudest cheers.

From the opening whistle, Combermere asserted their dominance, establishing an 8-2 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Goal shooter Tyesha Trotman and the eventual Most Valuable Player, Rianna Wiggins, playing in the Goal Attack position, showcased their superior skills by guiding Combermere to victory.

Trotman, netted 22 goals from her 28 attempts, and Wiggins, who scored two of her seven attempts, were formidable on the offensive end, while Combermere’s solid defence limited Alleyne School, resulting in a halftime score of 15-6.

Despite Alleyne School’s efforts, their struggles persisted in the second half, with Combermere holding a 21-9 lead at the end of the third period.

In the final period, Alleyne School demonstrated a late resurgence, outscoring Combermere five goals to three. However, it proved too little too late, as Combermere, recognised as one of the oldest schools in the Caribbean, erupted in jubilation.

Contributing to Alleyne School’s score were Jakaira Jones-Smith (10/13), Shakeena Piggott (3/5), and Tazaria Joseph (1/2).

The battle for third place between last year’s champions, Christ Church Foundation, and Springer Memorial unfolded as a closely contested match.

The teams were tied at 5-5 at the end of the first period, and Springer Memorial held a narrow lead of 9-8 at halftime.

The intense competition continued, with Springer Memorial maintaining a slim lead of 15-12 heading into the final quarter, and despite a resilient effort from Christ Church Foundation, Springer Memorial successfully fended off their opponent to secure the third position.

Combermere claimed all the individual awards, with Wiggins earning the MVP title, Kesia Watts recognised as the Best Defender, Alika Harewood adjudged the Best Midcourt Player, and Trotman awarded the Best Shooter.
