Haggatt Hall fire displaces seven people

Seven people were impacted as a fire at Barker’s Road, Haggatt Hall, St Michael destroyed one house and damaged two others as well as a car around 5:38 p.m. on Wednesday.

According to Barbados Fire Service Station Officer Roger Bourne, it was the fourth house fire and the second car fire in just 10 days into the new year.

Investigations are continuing into the blaze, but he suggested an attempt by a person to tackle mosquitoes may have resulted in the fire.

He advised the public to exercise caution.

“Even this evening, . . . unfortunately, a person was trying to run the mosquitos away with the smoke which caused the fire to go up. So be careful. There is a Ministry of Health that you can call and contact that deals with mosquitos and vermin and other things like that, so use the organisations that are there to help you mitigate these situations daily instead of taking [things into your own hands] and at the end of it neighbours are impacted.

“Today we have seven persons impacted by this fire and it could have been worse, but with the swift reaction from Sub-officer Nicholls from the Bridgetown Station, we were able to isolate this fire just to one particular home, but the others are slightly damaged but livable, at least for tonight,” Bourne said.

A team of 15 officers and three fire trucks from the Arch Hall Fire Station, the Bridgetown Fire Station, and the Worthing Fire Station responded to the blaze.

Officer Marlon Small who was also at the scene urged Barbadians to be mindful of their activity and maintain good housekeeping and fire safety practices. (SD)
