It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that the Executive Council of the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) announces the untimely passing of Alphonso Pollard, a respected former member of our Executive Council. Alphonso’s dedication to the labour movement and his unwavering commitment to the well-being of workers have left an indelible mark on our organization and the wider community.

Elected at the 61st Annual Delegates’ Conference (ADC), he served the Union with distinction. His roles as Secretary and President of the Council of Hotel and Restaurant Workers showcased his leadership and his passion for advancing the rights and welfare of workers in these vital sectors.

Alphonso was a forceful advocate for social and economic issues, never hesitating to lend his voice to the marginalized and underserved. His contributions extended beyond advocacy; he was a lifelong learner who enhanced his skills through various courses at the Frank Walcott Labour College (FWLC), embodying the Union’s ethos of continuous personal and professional development.

His achievements, as he often said, were significantly influenced by his involvement in the BWU. Alphonso generously offered his trade skills, notably in upholstering, to assist the Union, further demonstrating his selfless nature and commitment to the collective cause.

As an employee at Croton Inn, he was not just a colleague but a mentor and friend to many. His aspiration to organize workers and address their concerns for favourable outcomes was a testament to his dedication to improving the lives of all he represented.

General Secretary Toni Moore expressed her deep condolences, stating, “Alphonso Pollard was not just a colleague but a beacon of inspiration in our movement. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew him. His spirit and contributions will forever be a part of the BWU.”

The Barbados Workers’ Union extends its deepest sympathies to Mr Pollard’s family, friends, and colleagues. We mourn a great loss to our community and pledge to honour his memory by continuing the work he so passionately advocated for. (BWU)
