he government plans to strengthen the island’s sea defences to withstand category 4 and 5 hurricanes, Environment Minister Adrian Forde has announced.

The move comes in the wake of Hurricane Beryl’s devastation of the fishing sector and coastal areas from eight-foot-high storm surges.

At a press briefing, Forde outlined the government’s long-term strategy to build resilience against extreme weather events and protect marine ecosystems. “We are committed to building infrastructure that can withstand category 4 and 5 hurricanes. This includes reinforcing our coastal defences, upgrading our drainage systems, and constructing more resilient buildings,” he said.

The minister emphasised the link between climate change and the increasing frequency and intensity of hurricanes. “Climate change is a serious issue that affects not only our fisheries but also our entire environment,” he said. “The recent devastation caused by Hurricane Beryl highlights the urgent need for action.”

Forde stressed the importance of natural solutions in coastal protection. “Mangroves play a vital role in protecting our coastlines from erosion and storm surges,” he explained. “They act as natural barriers, absorbing the impact of waves and reducing the damage caused by hurricanes.”

The government’s strategy also includes tree planting initiatives and pollution reduction. “By keeping our beaches and oceans clean, we can ensure a healthier environment for future generations,” Forde added.

The minister highlighted the need for mental and social resilience alongside infrastructure improvements. “Building resilience is not just about strengthening our infrastructure; it’s also about preparing our communities mentally and socially to face the challenges posed by climate change,” he said.

Environmental conservation features prominently in the government’s plans. Forde said: “We will continue to implement and support initiatives that promote sustainable practices and protect our natural resources. This includes expanding our marine protected areas, enhancing biodiversity, and supporting sustainable fishing practices.”
