private primary school has launched a new programme aimed at improving literacy rates among its students.

On the first day of the school year, Principal of the Bridgetown Seventh-day Adventist Primary School Dr Cheryl Weekes shared the school’s plans, reflecting on the challenges many students faced transitioning from online to in-person learning after the COVID-19 pandemic.

One of the most notable initiatives is the expansion of the school’s reading club.

“We’re planning to have two groups and have been fortunate to receive pledges from teachers who will volunteer in the evenings to work with the children,” the principal said.

“Children who need special help with reading, as identified by their teachers, will be the first to participate. We’ve already set up a dedicated space for the reading club.

“We want to start from as early as Infants A, but this term we’ll focus heavily on students in Classes 1, 2, and 3. Wherever there’s a need, we’ll provide reading support. We want all our children to cultivate a love for reading, whether or not they have a deficit, as we recognise that reading is a dying art,” she added.

In addition to the reading initiative, Dr Weekes highlighted the school’s wide range of extracurricular activities designed to promote a well-rounded education. “We offer a variety of clubs, including football, road tennis, and a new computer club that will introduce students to coding and basic computer skills, such as creating flyers and PowerPoint presentations,” she noted.
