Springer Memorial celebrates 60 as new school year begins

pringer Memorial School launched its 60th anniversary celebrations as students and staff returned to campus for the new academic year on Monday.

 

The milestone year is set to be marked by a series of events, including a service at Dunamis Ministries, a mix and mingle, and a ball scheduled for later this term.

 

Principal Cheryl Gill told Barbados TODAY: “This is a seminal year in the life of the Springer Memorial School, and we have high expectations for the year.”

 

She said the school had prepared a blended programme incorporating the Ministry of Education’s Ready, Set, Go theme alongside anniversary activities.

 

The school began the year with a service in the auditorium, setting the tone for what Gill describes as an exciting academic year.

 

“Our staff are very excited about the start of the year, and they are committed professionals who will work together with the management, staff, and parents, to ensure that the students will achieve a high level of success in all spheres of life this academic year,” Gill said.

 

Students have also expressed enthusiasm for the new term. Sixth-year student Zada Batson shared her determination to excel academically while maintaining a balance with extracurricular activities. “I am looking forward to doing even greater things, especially achieving my academic goals while also being involved in extracurricular activities to have that balance.”

 

She referenced Philippians 4:13, saying: “With the help and strength of God I was able to achieve passes in all of my subjects for Unit 1 in Sixth Form, and I believe that God is able to do it again for me.

 

“I believe that for this Unit 2 I will be able to come out on top, just as scripture Philippians 4:13 said, ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me’. So I believe that this year is a great year for me.”

 

Student council president Kezia White- Keal, shared similar sentiments, saying, “This year I am expecting a productive year for all students. I’m also looking forward to growing my student council and working with the Barbados National Student Council. This year I would like to put God first in everything that I do and pass all of my exams.”

 

Springer Memorial was officially opened on October 1, 1964, by Sir John Stow, the last Governor of Barbados. It is named after educator Florence Springer, who was an aunt of National Hero The Right Excellent Sir Hugh Springer.
