Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Kerrie Symmonds shared the news during a meeting with the Barbados Coalition of Service Industries (BCSI) on Wednesday, noting this victory can be credited to the persistent advocacy of the country.ย โYesterday, the IMF accepted that the thresholds for the surcharges would be raised and that the ceiling would come down and that therefore it makes life easier for small and micro-states like ours,โ Symmonds said. The move aligns with Prime Minister Mia Mottleyโs push against the unfairness of surcharge policies, which, according to Symmonds, disproportionately affect smaller countries already burdened by high debt levels.ย โWe pay higher interest rates for our loans than the people in the metropolitan cities payโฆ weโre solving some of the same problems. They may want to have a way of adjusting to rising tidesโฆ battle with water shortages and drought conditionsโฆ. Weโve got those same problems too but weโre paying more than they pay for the solution,โ he said.ย Further noting the importance of this development and referencing the islandโs global influence, the minister said, โBarbados has once again now been recognised internationally asโฆ punching above our weight.โ You Might Be Interested In Crystal Beckles-Holder, 2nd runner up in regional competition GUYANA: Body of child found after gold mine collapses Barbadians asked to help with return tickets for Haitians โWe have pointed out the injustice of the arrangement and that for those of us who are on the cusp of a climate crisis, we take in the blows every day,โ he said.
