Strike causing delays in mail from Canada

strike at Canada Post, the primary postal operator in Canada, is affecting mail coming to Barbados from that country.

The Barbados Postal Service advised in a brief statement on Tuesday that delays should be expected in the processing and delivery of mail and parcels from Canada.

“The Postmaster General thanks the public for its patience and understanding during this period,” the Postal Service said in a brief statement.

About 55 000 employees represented by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers walked off the job last Friday, shutting down operations and halting deliveries as the busy holiday season kicks off.

The union wants a cumulative wage hike of 24 per cent over four years, while Canada Post has offered an 11.5 per cent increase. Other wedge issues include job security, benefits and contract work for parcel delivery on weekends.
