98-year-old former teacher was among the more than 250 retired educators honoured by the Barbados Union of Teachers (BUT) at its annual Christmas luncheon on Monday.

President Rudy Lovell said that the union wanted to do something special to thank the workers for their years of service and contribution to nation-building.

He said: “We wanted to honour the legacy of those who have shaped the educational landscape of Barbados and celebrate the invaluable contributions of individuals who dedicated their lives to nurturing generations of students.”

The event, held at the union’s headquarters at Merry Hill, Welches, St Michael, featured live music, games, and karaoke.

Lovell added: “These educators, whose lives are testaments to the power of knowledge and perseverance, were celebrated in grand style. Entertainment was provided by the talented Coleridge and Parry Band — The Echoes of Ashton Hall, whose performances created a spirited and joyful ambience. We also had fun activities for the former educators to engage in such as bingo and they got the opportunity to win several BUT-branded memorabilia. A karaoke session added a personal touch to the celebration, with many retirees taking to the microphone and sharing their favourite songs. The event was filled with laughter, music, and camaraderie, leaving attendees with cherished memories. We were also graced with the presence of the eldest retired teacher at 98 years old.”

Lovell added that it was important to give back to pave the way forward in the teaching profession.

“Their sacrifices and dedication laid the foundation for our successes today. The Barbados Union of Teachers is committed to recognising their legacy and ensuring that their contributions are never forgotten, ” he said.

“Our mission extends beyond advocacy and agitation. We are a community that values unity, respect, and the well-being of all our members, past and present.

“The annual Retired Teachers’ Christmas Luncheon serves as a poignant reminder of the deep roots and enduring impact of educators in shaping Barbados’ future. As the BUT continues its work, this tradition of giving back stands as a shining example of gratitude and appreciation for those who have dedicated their lives to the noble cause of education.”
