arbados has witnessed a significant boost in its cruise tourism, with a 23 per cent increase in arrivals from January to November 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, the Ministry of Tourism announced Monday, as a luxury superyacht called here for the first time.

Officials touted the inaugural visit of the Ritz-Carlton Ilma as a sign of the island’s growing appeal in the high-end cruise market.

At a ceremony at the Port of Bridgetown to celebrate the inaugural visit of the ship that was launched last year, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism and International Transport, Francine Blackman, said: “During the period of January to November 2024, we saw a 23 per cent increase in total cruise ship arrivals over the same period for the previous year.

“This has been confirmed by our Barbados Statistical Department, and they reported a total of 649 125 cruise arrivals for the period January to November 2024 over 526 114 cruise arrivals for the same period in 2023.”

Blackman described the growth as a testament to the island’s efforts to diversify and enhance its cruise offerings.

A brief tour of the Ritz-Carlton Ilma, the newest vessel in the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, showcased a display of opulence, boasting refined finishes, pristine and inviting spaces, and an ambience designed for ultimate comfort and elegance.

The permanent secretary described the inaugural call as “an exciting development for Barbados’ cruise industry”.

“The continued growth of our cruise industry highlights Barbados’ perennial appeal as an exciting, activity-rich destination,” she said.

Known for its luxurious amenities, the superyacht features 224 suites with private terraces and accommodates up to 448 passengers.

Blackman also highlighted Barbados’ commitment to improving the port’s facilities in response to customer feedback.

“What you are witnessing within the Barbados Port is that we have listened and responded to some of the concerns raised by our customers,” she said.

“The upgrades you see are reflective of our responsiveness, and we will continue to listen attentively to ensure we meet your needs as we go on to service you and other cruise ships.”

Stressing the importance of the luxury cruise market to Barbados’ tourism strategy, Blackman noted the focus on aggressive marketing to position the island as a premier destination in the southeastern Caribbean.

“We look forward to welcoming more luxury yachts like the Ritz-Carlton Ilma to Barbados,” she said.

CEO of Barbados Port Inc., David Jean-Marie, further noted the economic value of attracting high-end luxury yachts.

“It is important because those are customers who may very well have an interest in investing,” he said. “These visitors often return and stay in high-end hotels, and some arrive via private jets. It’s an important segment of the industry that we want to cater to.”
