The non-governmental organisation I Am A Girl has donated $5 000 worth of equipment – including a printer, ink, and 20 boxes of paper – to Springer Memorial School to support its printing and learning needs.

Friday’s handover took place during morning assembly, where I Am A Girl’s Community Engagement and Programming Assistant Samsha Payne spoke to students about the organisation’s mission to empower girls through education and leadership.

“This week is a special one for us,” Payne said. “We have World Mental Health Day, the International Day of the Girl Child, and our 11th anniversary. It felt right to give back to the school that helped nurture some of our DisruptHer mentees.”

The DisruptHer Programme, which recently wrapped up at Springer Memorial, is one of I Am A Girl’s flagship initiatives, designed to build leadership, confidence, and community among young women across the Caribbean.

In an interview, Raeann Flatts, communications and engagement coordinator, and Joy Drayton, DisruptHer facilitator, shared that the programme has reached schools in Barbados, Trinidad, Dominica, and Saint Lucia over the past three years.

“DisruptHer is all about teaching girls to become positive disruptors, to use their voices, lead with purpose, and influence change,” Flatts explained. “Many of our mentees go on to mentor others, keeping the cycle of empowerment alive.”

Springer Memorial Principal Sonja Goodridge expressed heartfelt gratitude for the donation, noting that the new equipment will make a tangible difference for students, particularly as they prepare for school-based assessments. (LE)
