Community uneasy after Weston shooting

Residents of Weston, St James, say they remain on edge following Saturday morning’s shooting, which left one man dead and another injured.

The incident occurred in the vicinity of the Millie Ifill Fish Market, and what appeared to be a bullet hole was visible on one of the nearby structures when Barbados TODAY visited the area.

Several residents voiced concern about crime in the community, saying too many young men were idle and engaging in reckless behaviour.

“Nobody doing nothing about it,” one man said. “You got a lot of young boys just smoking a lot of herb and doing a lot of foolishness around the place.”

Another resident suggested more licensed firearm holders could help deter robberies.

Management of the popular John Moore’s Bar has meanwhile distanced the establishment from the incident, following reports suggesting it occurred on the premises.

A spokesperson said, “I would like to set the record straight – there was no incident, no murder, no kind of crime inside John Moore’s Bar. We are a community-spirited establishment, a landmark of Barbados that promotes positivity and good vibes.”

The spokesperson added that the shooting occurred at the nearby Millie Ifill Car Park and not within the bar compound.

Police at the Holetown Station confirmed that the incident took place around 1:30 a.m. Saturday when a licensed firearm holder was confronted by three masked assailants who opened fire. He returned fire, killing one and injuring another.
