Court Local News No refund if gun offender fails to pay fine Jenique Belgrave10/01/20260490 views A Christ Church man has been warned that he will not be refunded the money already paid towards a gun and ammunition fine if he is sent to prison for failing to settle the balance. Rawle Anthony Caesar, of Kingsland Terrace, Christ Church, had pleaded guilty to possession of a 9mm Taurus semi-automatic pistol and ten rounds of ammunition on September 29, 2023. Last August, he was ordered to pay $26 000 for the gun, $10 000 of which was due immediately, and $6 000 for the ammunition. All fines were due by December 30, 2025, with an alternative of six years in prison. Appearing in the No. 4 Supreme Court for a review, the first-time gun offender admitted that so far he had only paid an additional $1 000 and still owed $21 000. Caesar told the court that he had paid some funds in December and intended to pay more by month-end. “But you had five months and have only paid $1 000,” Justice Laurie-Ann Smith-Bovell stated. Caesar replied: “I was injured for a little bit because my foot was broken and I was working on it on my own, and this is why the payments were moving so slow.” The judge warned: “You don’t get back the money if you don’t pay and go to prison.” Setting March 27 as the date for review, she stated: “I expect that you would have paid in a substantial amount by then.” The court heard that police had encountered a silver Toyota Axio along Tweedside Road and, acting on information, followed the vehicle, which sped off despite the siren and beacon being activated. As the chase reached Railway Road, the driver and frontseat passenger jumped from the still-moving vehicle, which then crashed into a wooden structure, forcing nearby residents to scatter for safety. Caesar, who was the left rear seat passenger, exited the vehicle, dropped a black and pink gun on the ground, and ran off in the direction of Halls Road. He was pursued and arrested by police officers and the firearm, loaded with ten rounds of ammunition, was recovered.
