NORTH CAROLINA — A Rhodhiss man who was attempting to shoplift at Walmart left his four and a half-year-old daughter behind when he ran away from loss prevention officers early Friday morning.
That’s what police say Joseph Randy Sheffield, 26, did. The incident happened on Friday morning and Sheffield is still on the run. Officials from the Department of Social Services went to the scene took his daughter in, according to Lieutenant Scott Hildebrand of the Hickory Police Department.
Witnesses said when store employees confronted Sheffield, he told them he had to go out to his car to get his identification. Once he got out the door, he sprinted into a wooded area leaving his daughter behind, asleep in the shopping cart, Hildebrand said. The police report does not specify what Sheffield was accused of stealing.
A records check showed that Sheffield has several outstanding warrants for breaking and entering from Burke County. He has also been arrested three times for shoplifting and one count of resist, delay and obstruct since 2008.
“He abandoned his child rather than being arrested,” Hildebrand said. “He had been banned from Walmart previously for a shoplifting incident.” (Daily Record)
