When you find that you have an interview for that job you always wanted do you stress yourself, cross your fingers and hope for the best? Or do you make a plan and do some research?
As an interviewee you should strive to express your ideas with clarity, confidence and precision. In order that you can successfully do this you must be prepared for the interview by anticipating the most likely questions that may be asked and rehearsing your responses.
This can only be achieved by researching the company. What are the company goals, objectives and mission statement? Are there guidelines for the interviewing procedure that the personnel department could forward to you?
Although you have researched and practised your responses your answers should appear spontaneous but also thoughtful, articulate, precise and coherent. Speak with confidence and make sure that you support your answers with relevant examples from your personal or previous employment experience. Let the interviewer know that you are the best person for the job.
Relate your answers to the job for which you are applying which is of important when candidates are faced with the indirect questioning style now favoured by many personnel departments. For example, the interviewer may ask you to describe your current job. This is a way of asking questions about your present skills and experience that appear to be unrelated to the job for which you are applying – they are of relevance to the interviewer. Just insure you are thoughtful about your response and how you relate it to the position for which you are applying.
Make sure your responses are positive and enthusiastic. Your interviewers will have studied your application form in order to identify your strengths but they will also have identified the weaker aspects and will quiz you on them. Be prepared for this and have a plan devised that outlines how you are overcoming these weaknesses or how you intend to overcome them should you successfully gain employment.
Ambition is viewed very highly so do not be afraid to tell the interview that you wish to advance within the company and how you plan to achieve such.
Always tell the truth in interviews but give it some “spin” by presenting the facts as positively as you can. Tailor the facts to strengthen your case and create the most positive impression to the interviewer.
Make good eye contact, remain relaxed and try to develop a rapport with the interviewer. The interviewer is a human being, so If you can give the impression that you both have a lot in common or are agreed on key issues, without appearing to be a “yes man”, you will greatly improve your chances of gaining the position.
In the majority of cases interviewers will place much greater emphasis on experience rather than qualifications, so try to convince them that your experience qualifies you for the job. Therefore use your previous experience, from any area of your life, as evidence to support your answers.
Consider the fact that you are also interviewing the interviewer. Ask question about the company, your role in it and what they can offer you in the long term! This shows that you are not only ambitious but also have an interest in the company and where they plan to go in the future.
