Prime Minister Freundel Stuart is to lead the Democratic Labour Party charge to get the finances of the Cave Hill campus of the University of the West Indies under control.
After telling a Democratic Labour Party St. James South branch meeting that unreasonable growth was responsible for Cave Hill’s woes, Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler revealed that Stuart is to lead talks with the top brass of the university.
“Prime Minister Stuart and a team of some of his closest advisors … met on this matter… The Prime Minister is going to meet with the university, the whole shebang, all of them from the top and we will explain to them, even as they explain to us what their issues are. At the end of the day, we will communicate to the public of Barbados.
“But there are two major points: One is what is in the best interest of the students and [two is] what is in the best interest of the country. That is what will obtain…
“What I will say is that we’ve made our commitments to the university and we will meet our commitment to the students of Barbados. But I’m making this point – I am not a plumber, but I know that if a pipe bursts, taking an old sheet and drying up the water is not going to help you if you don’t patch it because within a few hours or days the water will be there.
“And if you don’t patch it you can’t keep drying up ’cause you’re going to run out of sheets. So it is better to patch the pipe and stop the leak. And that is what has to occur in this situation. I am saying that that is the responsible thing that any responsible minister of finance, minister of education, minister of health, minister of foreign affairs and foreign trade, prime minister will do in the circumstances. So I make no apologies for what I say.” (RRM)
