The Barbados Association of Dragster and Drifters will stage its final event for the 2012 season on November 24 at the Bushy Park, St. Philip racing circuit from 3 p.m. until 10 p.m.
Billed as “The Final Showdown”, the event is expected to be the most exciting for the year, especially in the battle for the prestigious Driver of the Year Championship. David Hobbs with his very fast Mitsubishi Evolution 8 MR currently leads with 346 points, while Jason Downey with his Toyota RunX is a mere 16 points adrift with 330 and Clifton Pilgrim rounds out the top three with 306 points.
One mistake by either of these drivers on race day will see a complete change of positions, so no one can predict who will be 2012 Champion until the final rounds of competition have been completed. This time around, the management committee has decided to change the format of racing to make it more enjoyable for both drivers and spectators. The actual drag racing competition will be run from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m., and from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. the popular “Grudge Matches” and knockout competitions will be run.
The Knockout Competitions for FWD/RWD and 4WD cars will be done using a handicap format. There will be no time brackets, no breakouts and no two best of three runs. There will be an “A” class knockout where the winners advance to a final and an overall winner decided. After this, there will be a “B” class knockout for those competitors who got knocked out of the A class competition.
There will also be a “Heads Up” Knockout Competition for FWD/RWD and 4WD cars and the ones eligible to go to the finals of this particular competition, will be the ones posting the four fastest times of the day in each category.
Spectators will be given the opportunity on race day, to actually choose which drivers they wish to see paired up against each other for the “Grudge Matches” as well as the opportunity to call in to SLAM 101. FM with their desired choices at specific intervals.
Courtesy Garage, agents for Goodyear Tyres, have confirmed that the dynamic duo of Geoffrey Ullyett and Andrew Jones will be back again to entertain the crowd with their drifting skills, as well as give four lucky persons the opportunity to take a two- lap journey around the track, fully sideways.
The event is opened to members of all the motorsport clubs in Barbados, who are in possession of a valid BMF competition license. Interested persons can enter for the event by going to Motorsport Services, Haggatt Hall and are asked to note that entries will close at mid-day on November 23. The briefing meeting will be held that same evening at 6.30 p.m. at the Wildey Gymnasium.
A special package has also been put together for persons wishing to join the club and experience the rush of exciting drag racing for the first time.Interested parties can contact Adrian Linton at 256-0424 or Colin Goodman at 262-7751.
