Local volleyballers off to Jamaica for qualifiers
Barbados’ top female volleyballers are now fine-tuning their preparations for the qualifiers of the 2014 Women’s World Volleyball Championship which is slated for Italy.
The squad will be leaving for Jamaica shortly where the qualifiers will be held next week Thursday and Friday at the University of Technology (UTech) Auditorium in Kingston. Barbados are considered the favourites in the Group E qualifier and will do battle against the hosts, Aruba and Cayman Islands as they hope to advance to the prestigious international tournamernt.
The teams compete in a round-robin format initially and will play two matches each day, with match times being 10 a.m., 12 p.m., 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.
After the completion of the round-robin series, the teams will be ranked and the first-place team will play the fourth-place team, while second will play the third to determine the top three teams which will advance to the next round of qualifiers.
Barbados last encountered Jamaica during the Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association Championships in St Croix where they gave the girls from the land of wood and water a sound beating, with Shari Matthews and Anicia Wood being the outstanding players on show.
The Barbados team travelling to Jamaica next week is: Thonya Joseph (capt), Shari Matthews (v/capt), Afiya Taylor, Rheann Niles, Julia Lewis, Akeelah Blenman, Akeila Philips, Avara Browne, Shakira Jack, Kandia Shorey, Shirley Hoyte-Boyce (manager), Andrew Brathwaite (coach), Denzil Jackman (trainer) and Sherry Yearwood (referee).
