Hilton Barbados Resort’s Debra Stoute put her bartending skills to the test recently and came out on top, winning the hotel’s internal bartender competition.
The food and beverage assistant gained the highest scores in the competition and beat her workmates, including two bartenders, with her creation Mount Gay Surreal, to walk away with the top prizes of dinner for two at the Resort’s Grille Restaurant, a lunch tour for two of the Mount Gay Rum Distillery and a Mount Gay Rum gift basket.
Stoute, whose winning cocktail will also be incorporated into Hilton’s Christmas banquet menus, explained that her main ingredients were local mauby and sorrel:
“Individually, these two beverages are quiet refreshing and thirst quenching, however, mauby can be bitter and sorrel, sour. So when mixing the two I had to find the perfect balance, which I then paired with Mount Gay Extra Old Rum and other ingredients and the result was Surreal.”
Hilton’s general manager, Matthew Mullan, explained that he was quite impressed with the creativity of the competitors, noting that the competition was another way for Hilton to provide fun and exciting activity for employees, while showcasing their talents:
“The competition was open to all employees and they were required to create their special brew using a Mount Gay rum product and local ingredients. The drinks were then judged by Mount Gay’s mixologists and our in house guests; as well as via our Facebook page.”
The other competitors were Michael Bourne with Ambition, Shaka White with Wet Dream and Ramon Watson with Mount Gay XO Bajan Triple F Mix.
