soldiers mark milestone with run
Last Sunday the Barbados Defence Force took to the road to celebrate the CISM Day Run. This was the fourth year that the BDF had participated in this worldwide event since the inception of the CISM Day Run in 2006.
The CISM Day Run is one of the most important events organised annually by CISM (The International Military Sports Council). It celebrates the founding of CISM on February 18, 1948 and gathers the soldiers of the globe for one day under the sport’s flag.
The CISM Day Run is a valuable tool for marketing CISM’s presence all over the world, promoting the practice of sport in the military and bringing Sport Federations and International Institutions in contact with the Armed Forces. By doing this CISM contributes to universal peace.
The run began at 5:30 a.m. at the Barbados Coast Guard Headquarters and proceeded on to the Spring Garden Highway, then along Kensington Road, Fontabelle, Cheapside, Lower Broad Street, Broad Street, Bridge Street, Probyn Street, Lower Bay Street, Jemmotts Lane, Bay Street, and finished at the Barbados Defence Force Headquarters, St. Ann’s Fort, The Garrison, St. Michael.
Participants drawn from the Barbados Regiment, the Barbados Regiment Reserves, The Barbados Coast Guard, the Barbados Coast Guard Reserves, The Barbados Cadet Corp, The Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme, the Barbados Youth Service and two civilians, ran in cadence along the route, singing, clapping and encouraging each other in great camaraderie and on completion of the run all participants were awarded CISM Certificates of Participation.
