KINGSTON – Double sprint Olympic record holder Usain Bolt and Racers Track Club teammate Yohan Blake had to settle for runner-up spots in the 400 metres at Saturday’s UWI Invitational meeting at the Usain Bolt/UWI Track.
Bolt, who came to the spotlight running the 400 and 200 metres had to settle for second in heat seven behind eventual time final winner Nicholas Maitland (UWI, Mona) 45.79 seconds to Bolt’s 46.67 seconds for fourth overall, while his teammate Blake clocked 46.32 seconds for the runner-up spot behind Allodin Fothergill (46.24 seconds) in heat eleven as they were second and third overall.
Maitland also won the 400 metres hurdles in 52.35 seconds.
Rosemarie Whyte won the 400 metres Olympic development event in 52.34 ahead of Sherone Simpson (53.65) and Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce fifth in 56.63 seconds. Janieve Russell (UTech) won the collegiate 400 metres in 53.13 seconds.
Travis Smikle (UWI) won the men’s discus with a 56.70-metre throw ahead of MVP’s O’Dayne Richards 51.98 metres. Richards returned to win the shot put with a 19.00 metres put.
Jeffery King of GC Foster won the men’s javelin with 60.94 metres throw. UTech’s Geneva Greaves won the women’s discus with a 46.18-metre hurl as her teammate Shanakay Wollery won the shot with 14.47 metres put.
The sprints took place in strong head winds as Travane Morrison (UTech) won the 200 metres Olympic development event in 21.51 seconds, while UWI’s Kavean Smith won the collegiate men 200 metres in 20.99 seconds. In the women’s collegiate segment, Elaine Thompson (UTech) won over the same distance in 24.51 seconds and Inderia Spence (MBA) 25.37 seconds. Anneisha McLaughlin (MVP) won the 100 metres ahead of UTech’s Carrie Russell I 11.2 and 11.3 seconds, respectively.
