The Barbados national senior tennis team has been hard at practice, in preparation for this Friday’s Davis Cup match against Puerto Rico at the National Tennis Centre, Wildey.
Players Darian King, Haydn Lewis , Seanon Williams and Russell Moseley, along with non-playing captain Kevin Yarde, have been putting in mid-day sessions on the hard courts, fine-tuning their games for the challenging Americas Zone encounter.
“The sessions have gone well. Our players are in good shape and we will be ready for the tie. We are urging Barbadians to come out and support the national team,” Yarde said.
It is an important match for both teams as the losers will be relegated from Group 2 to Group 3 of the Americas Zone for 2014.
Following a 4-1 defeat by El Salvador in their first Davis Cup tie for 2013, the Barbadians are confident of a good showing on home courts after their 3-2 upset of Paraguay last year at the Tennis Centre. The Puerto Ricans, who were also defeated 4-1 by Mexico, arrived in Barbados last night and will be represented by Alex Llompart, Gilberto Alvarez and Christian Garay, with Jorge Gonzalez as non-playing captain.††
