Minister of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ronald Jones came, so did “Queen Elizabeth” and “Minister of Entertainment, Education and Resources, Donald Jones” just to witness the crowning of Shakira Husbands and Jabari Jones as Mr. and Ms. Ellerslie 2013.
Presented by the Ellerslie Key Club the Diamond Gala Jubilee took place Saturday night at the Roy Marshall Teaching Complex at the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus.
From the onset it was obvious that Husbands was the one to beat- she was a definite stand out. Particularly her talent, though she did not win Best Talent Female, instead Nicola King who placed first runner-up did, it was highly debated in the audience that she was more deserving. Her piece was excellent; it was a dramatic production which told the story of how drugs destroyed lives. Even though her microphone failed to work, due to technical difficulties, her voice was still clear and powerful, sounding full of confidence.
Each time she appeared after that the packed amphitheatre erupted in cheers for her: in Career Attire, Question and Answer and especially in Gala Attire for which she won Best Gala Wear. In this segment, Husbands wore a one shoulder floor length gown black which was accented with white and silver trimmings.
She also won the People’s Choice Female award.
King was satisfactory. She, like all the other contestants with the exception of third place winner,Tamika Nwaneri and Kci Ryan-Ward, were very poor in the Question and Answer segment. In Career Attire, she dressed as a business woman and in Gala Wear she wore a one sleeve lime green and brown gown. For talent she choose to perform a self-penned poetic composition titled My Voice. The petite beauty started the piece displaying her singing ability with the late Whitney Houston’s My Love Is Your Love then moved smoothly into the number, determined that her voice would be heard.
The winner of Mr. Ellerslie, Jabari Jones, was not as obvious as his female counterpart. Just after midnight when he was announced king he seemed just as shocked, or even more, than the audience and with some hesitance accepted his crown from Minister Jones. He was adjudged Best Career wear for his portrayal of a doctor.
The biggest shocker for the night went to†Akeem Jordan, he placed second but won the People’s Choice Male and was tied for Best Gala Attire Male with Shamario Harewood. It was a somewhat undeveloped interview with a make believe Minister of Education discussing issues such as: corporal punishment, the Alexandra affair and sports.
Second runner-up went to, Harewood who was also Most Disciplined.
Other contestants were: Ashaki Moore- she won the Spirit of the Pageant and Best Project Female. Moore was also a beautiful stewardess in her Career Attire and was stunning as she walked the catwalk in a long flowing, hot pink strapless gown. Kci Ryan-Ward was Most Improved, Kiana Brito Best Career Female, Best Talent Male went to Jamar Taylor and Terrence Beckles won Best Project Male. There was also: Chakra Callender, Jalisa Maynard and Donnico Brathwaite.Guest performers were: Rashida Codrington, Joshua Gay and Darrio Piggott.
