The Barbados Association of Dragsters and Drifters will be staging its quarter-mile acceleration test dubbed The Thickets Thriller on June 23 at Thicketts, St. Philip.
This event will be part of a double-header held in association with the Motoring Club Barbados Inc, which will start off the day of action with a speed event from Mapps to Stewarts Hill from 8 a.m. until mid-day and BADD will end the day with their event from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. Acceleration tests were very popular in the 1980s and 1990s, with the last event of this nature being held in 2003. Such venues as Lowlands, Paragon, Yorkshire in Christ Church and Bourbon in St. Lucy were filled with thousands of spectators early on Sunday mornings, especially when competitors came over from Trinidad and Tobago.
The likes of Cedric “Bugs” Shepherd in his popular Checkered Flag Car Shop Ford Capri, Euclid Brancker in his McEnearney Ford Mustang, Michael Skeete in his Ford Maverick, St. Elmo Cumberbatch in his BMW and Colin Goodman with his Terrapin are among the outstanding performers. Records however indicate that Brancker with his powerful Ford Mustang V8, holds the fastest time of 10.9 seconds recorded over this distance, but with the quantum leap which has been made over the years with respect to engine modifications and the more frequent usage of four wheel drive cars, it will be very interesting to see if a new “King of the Quarter” will be crowned on June 23.
With the eagerly anticipated Four Wheel Drive vs Rear Wheel Drive clash that is expected to unfold, all eyes will be on the powerful Mitsubishi Evolutions of Suleman “Sol” Eusuf, Matthew
“DMZ” Forde, Steve Bruce, Jamal “Most Wanted” Sobers, Barry Gilkes and Jamal “Fur” Batson to see if they can hold off the strong Toyota Corolla challenge from Corey Stanford, Duane “Shabba” White and Shawn Fields.
Others who are guaranteed to make good impressions are Anthony Ramon Archer in his quick Lime- sponsored Nissan Pulsar, Shawn “Short Man” Eversley in his Suzuki Swift, Michael “Chubz” Carter, Roger Lindo, Junior Moore and Bradley Niles in their very fast Hondas, Noel Pilgrim and Andre Waithe in their Mitsubishi Mirages, James Cox with his Toyota Glanza and Kerwin Sobers and Jason Downey in the Toyota Runx.
Spectators are being urged to obey the instructions of the marshals on Sunday to ensure a safe event. (PR)
